Newspaper Ajaleheleht

The special educational newspaper Ajaleheleht focuses on the coming of the euro. Ajaleheleht no. 17 was published in Estonian and Ajaleheleht no. 18 in Russian and they are intended to be used as study aids by students in the senior grades of basic school and in upper secondary school.

Kertu Ruus, journalist at the newspaper Äripäev, describes in the cover story of the new Ajaleheleht the new opportunities presented to Estonia by the eurozone and the changes in our daily life after the changeover. Columnist Ahto Lobjakas comments on the issues related to the expansion of the eurozone in the European context and Indrek Tarand, Member of the European Parliament, presents his position on this subject.

Rein Sikk, journalist of the newspaper Eesti Päevaleht, has written a cordial dialogue between the euro and the kroon. In addition, Ajaleheleht contains many interesting facts, a topical caricature, a cartoon strip Pesakond, and a news round-up.

The purpose of Ajaleheleht is to develop students’ skills of critical reading and analysis and to strengthen the habit of reading newspapers. Together with a collection of exercises in Estonian and Russian, this newspaper is a perfect study aid for media studies, language studies and other classes.

The educational newspaper was presented to teachers at following workshops:

  • 12 October in the hall of the Rural Municipality Government in Jõhvi
  • 15 October in the information centre of the European Union House in Tallinn,
  • 18 October in the hall of the Education Department of the Tartu City Government.
  • 25 November in Tapa High School
