On 1 January 2011, Estonia adopted the euro as its currency and became the 17th country to join the euro area. In anticipation of this historic event, a festive reception was held on Eesti Pank’s premises on 19 September 2010, marking the official launch of the joint media campaign for the euro changeover in Estonia. The event included the first presentation of the TV advertisements specially produced to help the people of Estonia get used to the euro banknotes and coins. Mr Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank, presented Mr Andres Lipstok, Governor of Eesti Pank, with the 17th “Euro Star”, a unique memento given to each new member of the Eurosystem.
